In todays music for digital media lecture I discovered a lot of interesting ways of short cutting between programs on Logic 8. When working in Logic this morning I discovered some easy interfaces and controls which I had not found in my 12 months as a Logic 8 user. Functions such as key control, audio/video settings and time code have made me fall in love with the program that little more. I found that when moving audio files in my previous projects I had to struggle to get the wave forms precisely at the point without an extreme amount of difficulty. Now with the help of the ctrl button I can use this function with ease, which is helpful when the art of making music for film is partly in the syncing process.
The part of Ingmar Bergman’s ‘Persona‘ that I have chosen is the first 30 seconds in the introduction out of 2:48 minutes (cutting out the arrival of the lights). My reasons for doing so is that the images chosen are very sparse and quick paced. When comparing that section to other sections in ‘Persona‘ I found that the introduction could be treated to a much more experimental soundtrack, due to its interesting choice of visuals.
The rest of the images offered to me would have suited organic instruments a lot more. However with the opening clip there was a lot of room for glitches, electronics and patches. Obviously when working with a computer to create music it is more fun to keep it completely electronic sounding and cut/manipulate whatever sounds or at your disposal.Using the loop function in logic it is a much more effective way of deciding what works best and where. It helped in deciding what sequence to use when I used that function to analyze the scenes a little closer.
The only problem/disagreement I have about the task was how short the clip was that we have been given (only 30 seconds). Obviously when working with music in film every second counts and these seconds of music can be altered sharply to change the state of the viewers mood. It would have been nice to have at least a minute to allow more of a progression in the music to unfold, it would have opened up more option of trying a view different things out due to the random nature of these images. However, I really look forward to seeing what everyone will do with the clips they choose.
Thanks,
Arran
